The Wisdom of the Ancestors

When we speak of the Ancestors, many of us think first of our genetic lineage, the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents whose blood flows in our veins. And yes, their stories, gifts and traumas live within us, imprinted in our DNA, carried in our bodies, often passed down unspoken. Yet the Ancestors are so much more.

We, too, are the Ancestors.

Life upon life, lifetime upon lifetime, we have been here before. The choices we’ve made, the roles we’ve played, and the pathways we’ve walked are woven into the tapestry of existence. The Ancestors are not only “behind” us in time but are also aspects of ourselves, past, present, and future. The stories we weave today, will become the Ancestors (or Ancestral stories) of our future time.

This work invites us to pause and consider:

• What have we carried forward, knowingly or unknowingly?
• What wisdom do we hold in our bones, waiting to be remembered?
• What unresolved grief, trauma, or imbalance continues to echo in our lives today?
• What reflections will our actions today stir into the tranquillity of moments tomorrow?

We live in a time when the wounds of history, colonization, separation, oppression, destruction of the earth, rise in our collective field. Much of what we face now is the outgrowth of choices made by those who came before us. Yet if we are honest, we must also admit: we were not always the victims of these choices. In lives past, we too have participated in creating suffering.

Karma, as the universal law of reciprocity, simply returns to us the fruit of what has been sown. It does not judge, it only balances.

And so, we find ourselves today holding the harvest of both beauty and wounding, of both wisdom and distortion.

But here is the grace: we can choose to bring healing to these ancestral threads.

When we attune to the Ancestors, we are not only tending to the wounds of the past but also opening to the wisdom of the Ancient Ones, the keepers of sacred knowledge who whisper through the subtle realms. These luminous elders have always walked with us, guiding from beyond the veil. They speak in dreams, in synchronicities, and through the vibrational language of sound.

Across traditions, sound is the bridge. The Tibetans speak of the Pure Realms of Light and Sound Where the Holy Ones Dwell. Many Indigenous peoples see the River of Stars, the Milky Way, as the passage home for souls, a pathway sung across by shamans and spirit-guides. In every culture, song and tone are central to honoring the Ancestors.

And, when we realize we, too, are those dreamweavers, have spoken our earnest truth, and have incredible wisdom and potent memory living within us, waiting to return, waiting to arise in the potent moment of this time. It becomes an ever-growing, evolutionary, state of rich and vital empowerment, of deep knowing and remembrance, of who we are, of why we have come, and what we bring as an offering to the bounty of this new time, this New Earth.

Through sound healing, we can enter into this communion. A single tone sung with intention can become a thread that connects us across time.

The steady rhythm of a drum may open the way to remembrance. The resonance of bowls or bells can call forth the presence of luminous elders, inviting their guidance and blessing.

The Ancestors remind us that healing does not belong to the past alone. It is a living vibration, moving through us in every breath, every tone, every moment of presence. By listening, sounding, and attuning, we restore harmony to the lineage we carry and offer new pathways for those who will come after us.
